 Have you taken the valve cover off to check the timing chain top guide.  The 
EVIL L may have broken off and fallen down to the bottom.  The timing chain 
could be hitting that piece.  That would be proportionate to the engine speed 
and would cause the sound to be up front of the engine right behind the water 
pump  Good to rule it out.
