John,
Take the fan belt off and turn the water pump, alternator and air
pump(if you have one) by hand. Could be something like a water pump stud
sticking
out a little far and hitting the pulley. Try starting it with the belt off.
Does it change when you push in the clutch? Could be the throw out
bearing or a transmission problem.
Next thing to do would get a clean oil drain pan. Make sure it's really
clean, wipe it out with Windex or something. Then drain the oil and look for
metal bits. Get a drop on your finger and hold it up in the sun. If you see
sparkles you've spun a bearing or something.
Hopefully it will be an easy fix.
