Well, moving it so it's flat let it fire a little more, but still won't
start. How cold-blooded are these things? Do I need to change the tuning now
that's it's cooler weather? It started right up when it was warm.

Wish I knew for sure. I think so since it's fired a couple times; just won't
catch.

The spade connector that you mention looks okay. Again, w/ no tools
available.....

One thing I'm wondering about is the fuel line from the fuel pump. Some PO
ran the tube up from the pump to the height of the alternator, then over to
the right fender before heading forward over the voltage regulator to one of
those plastic in-line fuel filters, then around the front of the radiator
before looping back to the inlet pipe by the front carb.

I see fuel in the filters (there's one on the fuel pump inlet side, too),
but is this a bit too far for the fuel to travel? I'm parked a little
uphill, and the only other time it wouldn't start it was parked uphill.
Hmmmmmmm.....

Do you have spark? A timing light while you're cranking will tell you
for sure. I had this happen suddenly and it was the spade on the side
of the distributor that the thin wire connects to. I had to take that
apart, sand all the metal pieces clean, then reassemble, then it was
good as new.

Replace your distributor with a Gary Boone EI DIZZY any most of your
troubles will be over. My car did the same thing, I thought it was the
carbs, I would crank in the morning until the battery went dead, when I
could get it started, it would die at stop signs and I would crank on the
starter 5-6 times just driving through town to work eight miles away. Also,
when I stepped on the gas, I left a smoke screen that would make any soldier
jealous not to mention misfire and poor performance. Since I installed the
EI, I have had no trouble starting, driving and I have made my power band
600 rpms taller. Waste no time, e-mail Gary and get one for your sanity.
