You might want to try this, if you're handy...
Step 1 - Using a small grinder attachment on a dremel tool, I would carefully
grind the build-up back to its original size.
Step 2 - Prime area and use a good quality rust-inhibitor-type paint, such as
Por 15 or Eastwood equivalent. Let dry thoroughly. Follow instructions on
label.
Step 3 - Install glass, rubber gasket and trim as usual. Any repair should
be covered by the new rubber and not seen.
