Got home from the 1000 mile Irom Bottom Tour Saturday, we had the only Roadster
in a sea of Porches, MGBs, MGBGTs and a beautiful MG Midget, an Alfa Guiletta
1600, a right hand drive yellow Iso Griffo, a pre war Bentley, a Packard, two
Volvo P1800s, at least 2 Zs, one driven by Les Canaday, a Firebird 400,
Cameros, a Cadillac Eldorado, a real Mini, a Cortina, a few Triumphs, including
a ratty blue TR3 with only a brooklands screen and no windshiled, and two cold
drivers, a 230 SL MBZ, a Jenson, a DB 6, a fast VW Bug, two big Healeys, a
Sunbeam Tiger, a 57 red Corvette, and a fabulous 1952 Mexican Roadracing
Lincoln, among others. I think there were more than 50 cars.
The incredible roads took us to King City via Frazier Park and Atascadero
Thursday night and to Paso Roblas Friday for a group dinner. They were
wonderful narrow twisties with very little traffic except for the cows, and I
will use some of them for a Southern California ride later this year. The 1600
roadster did great on the back roads, but was blown away by the bigger cars
when the roads straightened out.
The Roadster ran great for more than a 1000 miles of driving, except for a
broken tach cable and a suspension that lowered itself a bit by the end of the
run, and is now rubbing on my right rear tire when the going gets bumpy. We
ran topless for most of the way, and it was generally sunny and warm except for
the stretches along the coast.
Next year the Iron Bottom will be in early April, and I am going to go again, I
hope in my black 2000 solex. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
I'll be posting pictures in a few days when I can catch my breath.
