The car show scene in the Phoenix area is growing by leaps and bounds!
Yesterday we had an absolute blast with our 260Z at the show at Park
Central Mall on Central Ave. & Osborn. Every 6 months a "Cruisin'
Central" event is held in conjunction with the what I've been told is
weekly Park Central car show. Yesterday was the cruise, and for those
of you who remember cruising Central Ave. before it was made illegal, it
was like a flashback to the '70s! It took over 1/2 hour for us to
travel a mile on the street that was absolutely PACKED with a great mix
of classic and performance cars. People lined the streets to watch the
cars cruise by, and hundreds more cars were parked in the parking lot.
I wish we could have taken a Roadster, but our only runner (the '63)
needs some work before hitting the streets.
There are at least three weekly shows that I know of... the kinds of
shows (like the Cruisin' Central event) that aren't competetive & are
mainly so owners can see & be seen. There is no entry fee to
participate that I'm aware of, although the Cruisin' Central special
event had a $5 entry to conver insurance. The majority of cars that
show up at these events are American, with Hondas & Toyotas the major
representation of Japanese steel. At this particular show yesterday,
the only Datsun/Nissan cars were a couple 300ZXs, a 510 & a 280Z. We
got there too late to park in the display area.
Now for the Roadster content.... there are plenty of opportunities for
us desert rat Roadster owners to get together & show off our pre-Z cars.
Although most of these events run into the night, when the weather is
nice (like it is now) people start gathering at around 2pm in order to
get good parking, and many leave before it gets dark.
If there is any interest in a Roadster contingency at one of these shows
(or maybe an In-N-Out Burger or Sonic run?) drop me a line and maybe we
can get something going!
