Graeme,
I've had pretty good luck with a high speed dremel tool and that
little cutting disc spinning at 20,000 rpm. Just enough to grove
the top of the inner race, then a smack from my old 4# sledge
hammer and a cold chisel in place to crack the collar and off
it will come!
Stan -- Need to try that "vise trick" to remove the outer bearing
race next time. Just something new to try (I use a 4" makita grinder,
makes quick work on the outer, but too nervous to try that on the
inner race (to easy to nick the axle).
