Toyota put it in many cars they sell in Sweden so..... I dont buy one.
They usually only record G-forces in an accident but there might be
more sophisticated boxes installed that they dont tell about. I dont
know how many others who are doing it but I definately know Saab (GM)
does it. In case of an accident only the insurance company and the
manufacturer have access to the stored data here. I removed the front
seats in my latest Volvo to take a look and make shure I dont have one
of those in my car.
On the other subject of where the car has been, there are GPS tracking
devices combined with alarms that can store several months of activity.
Carjacking has become a problem even in Sweden and it's possible to
immobilize the car by using a cellphone to send an SMS message to the
car to stop it. Also, "big brother" can keep track of you (or rather
your phone) by positioning your cellphone. I know of an insurance
company who had many customers with stolen rear wings from their cars.
They put a tracking device inside one and parked the car in a selected
location. It didn't take long to put the thiefs behind bars.
