Brian:
According to a Ford manual I read once, only one side (slot) in the
mechanical advance is used to control the amount of ignition advance.
Different advance curves can be acheived by which side of the distributor
the active slot is on and the stiffness of the springs used to control the
movement of the weights. Nissan was doing the same thing apparently, as a
look at the roadster parts catalog shows three different springs available
for each side of the advance.

Subject: distributor advance mechanism question
The slots in the dist cam in which the advance weights travel are of
slightly different lengths. Why? Intuitively this doesn't make sense.
