There are a couple of things can think of to cause this.
First, if you put the trans in neutral and rotate the input shaft does the
output shaft rotate? If so, the trans is in one of the forward gears.
There are interlock pins, balls (I think) and springs in the top of the
case that are to keep the trans from going into more than one gear at a
time. They may be gummed up.
It is possible that one of the shift forks is not fully seated on the
detents and the above mentioned interlocks think it is in a gear when it
isn't.
The easiest way to find out is to flip the trans over on it's top (after
draining it) and pulling the bottom pan. You should be able to slide the
shift forks back and fourth, especially with the trans in neutral. With
the forks all in neutral you should be able to get the trans to shift into
any gear.
While you are in there check the bearings on the lay shaft gear cluster.
They have a tendancy to go out. If you can move the gear sideways
(purpendicular to the shaft) they are bad and should be replaced. The
shaft is usually bad too. The bearings, shaft and thrusts should be
available from the dealer or one of our suppliers. Leaving it unrepaired
will cause greatly accelerated wear on the gear cluster, which is not
cheap to repair. If you tear the trans down check the synchronizers for
wear and replace worn ones. They are not cheap, but well worth it. the 2nd
gear synchronizer is usually the one with the most wear.
