One of the reasons the valve cover leaks is that after the head has been
warped only the gasket side has been cut true and the valve cover side is
still warped.

It's very important to retorque the head every few thousand miles. If it has
recently been cut and reinstalled the head should be retorqued after the first
startup and heat cycling and then about 100 miles after that and 500 miles
after that and then once every 2-3,000 miles. More than the service manual
recommends but it's better to be safe than sorry. Bob Sharp recommended the
retorque after the first startup.

There is no easy way to fix a rear seal problem although I noticed after
my car overheated, it seemed to greatly reduce the rear seal leak.
I figure it sort of "heat formed" the waxy rope thing rear seal.
I do not recommend this method!!

As far as valve cover sealing, smear a little wheel bearing grease
on the gasket surfaces. They always want to weep a little at
  the front and back.....

Run on is usually caused by too low an octane although too much advance or
a
high idle can cause the problem. I suggest using high test.
