Heater Hoses

On my 69 1600, the heater hose sizes by the OD of the heater connections
at the heater core is 5/8. However, where the hoses connect to the
engine the OD of the heater hose connections is =.  Was there supposed
to be an adapter somewhere thats been lost, or am I just supposed to
cram a =  ID hose onto a 5/8 connection? Or torque the 5/8 hose down
onto a 1/2 connection?
