I actually know the seller, because I bought the car that the tag was on for
parts. The body tag and title matched (I believe from a '67), body was off
of a 67.5. The frame number looked like it was off of a 65 (SPL311-00128)

We affectionately named the car Frankenstein.

I later discovered that the frame was also a 67.5. The zero's in the vin
were X'd out and 1's were stamped below and little Datsun emblems were
stamped above. If you go to www.wycroc.org click on the gang, then click on
my name and you'll see a picture of this VIN.

I don't think the seller means any foul business. I think it's more of an
issue that if someone has a car and need a clear title, this might help.
Could it be used inappropriately? Sure. I've seen a lot of the repro VIN
tags sold, too. They can be just as abused, if not even more.
