Thanks to everyone for the tips.
I got back from work this evening, pushed the Datsun around
the underground carpark at our apartment to get the engine
compartment under a decent light, and starting poking around
at the wiring harness.
The lights didn't dim when I turned the ignition to start, so
going by the list's suggestions, I suspected the connectors.
The wire from the battery positive snakes around the back
of the engine compartment and to the starter. Near the
clutch master cylinder on the firewall are 3 connectors
coming out of the wiring loom. I pulled the two closest ones
apart to find the contacts in pretty grotty shape. I scraped
at them with a screwdriver, put them back together,
and whatdayaknow, it starts!
I'll give the contacts a better clean on the weekend, but
for now, I'm back on the road.
Time to find some new automotive electrical connectors at
Kragen...
