I stopped by the local Datsun dealer late today and he said he thought he
could order one. Is this really something that somewhat's universal that
I could pick up at any decent auto parts store?

Like John said, sounds like a bad ballast resistor. This part is about
$5 at a good auto parts store; bring yours in as they may not list it
specifically for the roadster but they do list it for old datsuns. I
matched it up by looking at the pretty pictures in their parts book.
