I am going to have my 1988 BMW painted in the very near future (assuming
they can weld a new roof on - when parking on a hill make sure you set the
e-brake!!). The person doing the work on the car is a "shadetree" mechanic.
What I mean is he doesn't have hugely expensive equipment or a paint booth
at his disposal. Having said that I have seen some of his work and it is
pretty good. I hate to sound dumb, but I don't know what questions I should
be asking him regarding how he is going to do it. The car is diamond black
metallic. He said that he uses PPG paint. I hear a lot about base
coat/clearcoat - is that the way to go? Any advise is appreciated. Thanks.
