My mistake it's 23.7 mpg/US.

You cant really compare a
TR4 engine to an FJ20.

That switch was probably the
Laycock (GKN) overdrive.
Many British cars and Volvo's
had them. On later cars it
only worked in 4:th as a
5:th gear. The "on" position
was 0.8:1 on Volvo 1800S.
The nice thing about it was
that it was possible to switch
on and off without using the
clutch.
