I had several request for this, so sent it to the list.
If you are not deep into install of an early car
windshield, you will probably want to skip this.
I will try to get this step by step, but beware I might
forget some details.
1- I had the frame rechromed, 5 pieces (dont forget the
little rod). If I did it again I would do the the 2 galvanized
pieces rivited to the sides. I used all new gaskets.
2- for the bottom piece, I glued (automotive rubber glue, get
the big tube, black color stuff) the gasket to the bottom,
this is the frame to car gasket. I had to wrap it with electrical
tape to make it stay. I left it dry for a day.
3. I glued the windshielf gaskets to the glass. The side ones
needed to be cut, I used 14 inches. I made the sides the
ones that went all the way to the edge of the glass, and
the top and bottom meets the sides. I think this is right.
4. Let that dry a day, then I put the bottom frame on the
glass gasket. Use plenty of lubricant, I used wd-40.
Glycerin would be good, and rubber friendly. I
did not use any glue. Next I put the sides on,
same thing, slow, easy, plenty of lube. Put the wierd
u shaped top clamps on, the feet slide under the metal,
and on top of the rubber.
5. Oh yea, here is some important points. Make sure you know
which is the right and left side. They are slightly bent for a reason.
Dont ask me how I know this. Also, before putting the sides on,
put the galvanized metal things on the sides. These hold the
weather stripping. (same kind as for the doors) I used
nuts and bolts, nr 8 I think. I should have used stainless steel.
The small hole by itself goes up and to the inside. I dont
know what its used for. Put the nuts on the outside of these
metal things to avoid glass interferance. You might just
leave them on and get the whole thing re-chromed, or
use rivits if you are a purist.
6- Last thing was the top metal, work it down slow and under
the wierd metal U clamps on the sides. BTW, I had a
few fasteners loosly holding the sides at this point.
(the 2 flat head screws top and bottom each side)
7- I had to trim a bit of side rubber to get the top metal on
8- slowly and evenly tighten the side fasteners
9- install the center chrome rod
10- Place the windshield on the car, have the doors open,
get the bottom studs down into the car.
11- Fasten the 2 bolts on each side, and slowly tighten
evenly. This part scared me some, as there was
almost a 1/2 inch gap to take up. The frame did not
bend though, the car metal came out to meet the
windshield.
12- Before the frame is all the way tight, crawl under the
dash and tighten the bottom nuts. I used tape in the
socket to make the nut stick in there and easy to
get started.
13 wiggle the frame a few times during these steps to
make sure it settles down to its natural place
14 Wipe fingerprints off glass and go for
high speed test drive.
