The inner end of the adjustment bolt should look like a pyramid. Usually
they're pretty crudded up
from all the brake dust and such, so you may have to remove it and clean it up
to really see it.
Take a look at http://www.gordon-glasgow.org/Images/43.gif. The two little
pieces (labelled 41 in
the diagram) sit against the ends of the brake shoes. As you turn the adjuster
in, the pyramid end
forces these pieces apart, tightening up the brake adjustment.
There are a couple of theories about how tight to adjust them. One is to adjust
it down until the
axle won't turn, then back off three clicks (1 click = 1/4 turn). The other is
to adjust it down
until there is significant drag and then back off two clicks.
The handbrake adjustment is up towards the tunnel on the cable. Be sure the
handbrake doesn't drag
when the axle is at full droop, or if you go over a "yump" the handbrake will
apply rear brakes!
