Ben-
I recently was looking for the same. I visited several battery shops and
found that the highest perf motorcycle battery that these shops carried was
something like 375 CCA. The gell batteries were about the same, although
you will have to have them tested as generally these batteries are not rated
based on CCA. In my opinion, the gell or totally sealed batteries are best
and probably the safest. They can be mounted in any position and do not
require a vent. I would also feel very safe mounting these without a box
(no fear of acid spills). These batteries (like the Optima) are not cheap
though. If you decide to go with a regular vented battery, the European
spec batteries have a great venting feature that allows one to hook up small
medical tubing to vent the gases to the outside.
FWIW:
Foregoing all this advice, I chose a regular battery (875 CCA). I wanted
the smaller batteries but I wanted the security of having the extra CCA's
should a starting problem arise on the road. I know several others have
used the smaller batteries with no problems.
