I clearly recall my '63 had pile carpet.  I don't remember what the edge
binding was like, but I do know that after only a couple of years of
use, the carpet was completely worn out. On the other hand, the carpet
and interior of my '83 Firebird daily driver are like new.  So some
things do get better.
