There are actually 8 pads, four on each side (at least there were on my
'69). All were approximately 10" to 12" long.
I actually took pictures so I would know exactly where these went (very
uncharacteristic of me). For each side starting from the front of the car:
One pad on the main frame rail - front edge of pad even with where the front
of the X member meets the main rail.
One pad on the X member at the very front of the X member.
One pad on the main frame rail, fore of the rear axle, approximately
centered over the body mount that is bolted to the lower front of the rear
fender well.
One pad at the rear of the main frame rail - rear edge even with the front
edge of the rear cross member.
This is kind of hard to describe...I hope it makes sense.
For what it's worth, I replaced the original pads with 1/4" closed cell foam
which does not absorb water.
