For all:
I finally located and talked to the guy who built the engine that's in my
roadster. Would appreciate any comments if any of this sounds to good
to be true, and or any pitfalls I might have...this guy is a machinist, built
the engine for his roadster drove it for about 1k, then swapped in a
302 V8. He says it has: 2liter crank and rods, 040/over flat top
pistons, "really big" valves (the biggest ones he could fit, with
the stems cut and machined to the right height) and a "strong" cam. He
couldn't remember details of the valves or cam, but said the
power came with a rush at 4000, and the engine was good to 7000.
He said the intake was machined out to let the valves breathe, and
to match 240Z SU carbs. Also new 2liter oil pump and distributor.
I will say that when I hotwired and drove it before the restoration
it was quick, and had a really crappy idle, I couldn't slow it to less than
a lumpy 1000 RPM. Tonight I measured the carb intake, they are
1 and 22/32nd inches. The stock air cleaner has had the holes
reamed to make them farther apart, so the 4 mounting studs will
fit. Then, he asked if I still had the 5 speed. He sold the previous
owner the motor and a 5 speed. I never even looked for this, so
I went and looked. There sure seems to be an extra cog up and to the
right, and the shifter seems farther forward than it should, someone
has cut the hole in the tunnel up about 2 or 3 inches, and there are
remains of some sort of cross tunnel brace where the shifter sticks up.
He said to use good gas, drive fast, and use 20w-50 or straight
40weight oil. THe previous owner only drove the car a few tanks of
gas worth during the 5 years or so he owned it, and when I took the
valve cover off it looked absolutely gunk free and pristine.
Is this a really good deal, or is it impossible to build a pushrod
2liter to these specs???
Thanks!
Jim
