My '69 2000 does that idle thing too, as did my 550HP 454 Chevy. I
think
it has something to do with the distributor. I haven't taken mine out yet,
but I'm figuring on the dist being gummed up with 30 years of crud or
having a broken centrifugal advance spring.
Your pinging could well be a side-effect of a sticky distributor - the
centrifugal advance fails to fall back, so the timing stays too advanced.
Let me know what you find out!
