As an engineer for Land Rover North America, I know a little bit about the
current form of the "215" buick v-8. It is used in the Range Rover, Discovery
and Defender. Up until 1996 it still had a distributor and was said to displace
3.9 litres. In 1996 they made a few changes. It now has cross-bolted mains,
distributorless ignition and different pistons. The displacement did not
change, but they called it a 4.0 litre to highlight all the changes. In the
Range Rover it is available in a 4.6 litre version. They both have 9.35:1
compression.
The 4.6 is rated at 240bhp. The trick to putting a distributor on this motor is
to mill the crankshaft to accept the 3.9 litre front cover and to install a cam
either aftermarket or stock that is meant for the 3.9. I have a friend who did
this in one of his older Land Rovers. He is running a quadrajet carb I think.

If you are going to install a version of this v-8, I suggest that you find a
Land Rover in a junkyard and try to get one of these motors
