I'm thinking shock isolation might be important also.
Not in normal use, but if someone slipps, or you had a minor collision,
whatever, and overloaded the gear lever, there is nothing to prevent
breaking the tranny internals. The rubber bush, it would seem to me, would
prevent impact damage to shifter forks, synchro teeth etc. 

Just a thought
