When I needed to replace some sheet rubber pieces on my snake, I
had trouble finding decent quality rubber at any of the local hardware
stores, including Home Depot.
At a minimum you want Neoprene for this type of gasket. And I
emphasize, that's a minimum. You want rubber that has good UV resistance
and the stuff available at hardware stores in marginal in this regard.
Most of my use was under the hood, but I also had to fabricate some
window washer gaskets that were no longer available. I used urethane
for this too. To get rid of the gloss, I hit the exposed side with fine
sandpaper.
