Larry,
OK, call me silly, but I like Dave Russell's "flag on the piston" idea.  
Seems like the simplest.  If you can't get a helper to watch - maybe you 
could mount a video camera somewhere on the engine record the flag movement.  
Then you could watch it later while you're NOT driving.  Hey, how about 
mounting an electronic tach & speedo in the frame too?  Then you could 
measure piston rise relative to mph and rpm.  Mmm...maybe I'm making it too 
complicated now!  Anyway, can't wait to read what you figured out.  Keep us 
posted!
