Bob, what about a muffler without a chrome tip, and a separate tip ?  I
haven't looked recently, but JC Whitney used to sell all sorts of "glass
packs" aka resonators, in different lengths and diameters.  And Pep Boys
carries a variety of chrome tips, some of which look pretty 'retro' to me.

For that matter, I found that a downturned tip made a big difference in the
sound of my TR3A, and looks good (to my eye anyway, which is what's
important) too.
