I have seen some of these tastefully done in another material besides the 
original cardboard. 
   Fire is not really a concern, because from a theoretical perspective, their 
distance from the exhaust manifold plus the airflow due to the cooling 
fan causes me to think they wouldn't get too hot.  Empirically speaking 
though, one would think they're worse off, since they're invariably 
soaked with oil, but as of yet I've never seen an engine fire in a Spit 
that could be attributed to one.
