At the risk of being not quite so technical as some of the commentators on
the issue of coils, let me suggest a modern electrics remedy for those who
can afford to sacrifice authenticity (TC, TD, owners, etc, read no further!).
Do what I did and convert to electronic ignition. My setup, which consists of
a Crane Ignition (formerly Allison Ignition) PS-91 Low Energy race coil, a
Crane HI-6 Multiple-spark capacitative discharge ignition module, and a
Lumenition (a British part, at last!) optical trigger (which eliminates the
points and condenser), works wonderfully under all conditions. Spark output
at 6,500rpm is as strong as at 3,000. And last but not least, twin 12 volt
batteries wired in parallel provide 1,050 cold cranking amps for cold weather
starting. One thing: you'll have to change your Smiths electric tach for a
more modern one, because the Smiths atch doesn't have a provision for a
separate tach pulse input from the coil,as do more modern designs.
