I've had a Sunbeam Alpine for over a year now and have found it
to be a great car. Very solid, handles well, great on the
highway with OD, comfortable. A great driving car. The one
problem is that it could use a little more pep. A company called
Holbay Racing Engines LTD. has a number of standard
modifications for upgrading the 1725CC Sunbeam Motor used in the
Series V Alpines. The simplest keeps the dual Stromberg
carburettor set-up (which I want to keep for the stock
appearance), but modifies the cylinder head and reprofiles the
standard camshaft. The power output is said to be 98 BHP (up
about 7 BHP from stock) with a 9% increase in maximum torque.
I have no experience with this type of thing, and I would be very
interested in views as to whether this sort of increase would
make an appreciable difference in accelleration in street use
conditions. Thanks in
advance.
