Your high hydrocarbon level may be the result of too lean a mixture.
What happens is that when you lean out the mixture to reduce
the CO, the engine starts to missfire, resulting in unburned
fuel (hydrocarbons) in the exhaust. The trick is to lean it out just
enough to put the CO level below spec but not enough to
raise the hydrocarbon level above spec.
The unburned hydrocarbons produce a very distinctive smell in the
exhaust, a kind of sickening, instant headache sort of smell.
