Comercially a whole swag of products are marketed as rust retarders. Most
are based on a water displacing Corrosion Inhibitor (WDCP) normally a
petroleum sulphonate or Long chain amine, a film forming agent (wax) and a
carrier petroleum spirits.
Those use in the car industry and in the consumer markets are based on
those used in the aircraft industry but with a slightly different slant.
They work! but they must be re applied and should be thought of as a
maintenance item. It seems to be best to appliy a thin film type first
then overcoat with thicker ones.
We are currently doing some research into exactly how these things work as
we wish to use them in museums. We should have some answers in 2-3 years.
Dinol seems to make a good product range and they are available in the us
for use in aviation. I do not know if they are available as a consumer
product in the US but they are in the UK. Volvoline also makes products of
this type.
