I have a 1980 Austin Maxi with the 1750 engine. For the Americans,
this was a car built by BL from 1969-1981. It was the first British
car with a hatchback, one of the first mass production cars with a 5
speed gearbox, hydrolastic 'float on fluid' suspension and was the
last car designed by Alec Issigonis.

The single carburettor versions have problems with vapour locks. The
fuel pump (mechanical SU) is mounted on the front of the engine (it's
front wheel drive, transverse engine) and the fuel then passes over
the engine to the SU HS6 carb mounted on the back. When the car is
warmed up, stopped for a couple of minutes (like stopping for petrol
or the shops) and then restarted, it is very reluctant to go for the
first couple of minutes. A good dose of choke gets it going, but
does anyone know why it has the problem in the first place?
