Californian Cars?

Hi All,
First I thank everbody for their help with my friend who wants to send
a car back to Europe.
Secondly, I had one more question...
How does one know if a car is REALLY a Californian car?
How does one go about tracing a cars history quickly to make sure it's 
not an eastcoast import (No offense to all you out there, I'm in Michigan
where the car rusts out from underneath you... :()???
