One good reason I can think of not to put the switch near the top is 
because if the coolant level drops, the switch may not activate the fan 
at all. I don't know how various components might work in your case, but 
I had this problem in a Saab 99 with a slow collant leak. And no, it 
wasn't a Triumph-derived problem. This was a 2.0L, K-Jetronic equipped 99.
