Seems to me picking up a badly rusted but mechanically sound GT6 and 
transplanting the drivetrain might achieve the desired effect at less 
than the cost of a rebuild of the original engine alone. Depending on the 
donor, it's a virtual bolt-in (and reversible, for later sale to 
originality freaks) job. If the rest of the Vitesse is to original 1.6l 
specs, it's likely the transmission and differential would be hard put to 
handle the extra strain anyway.

I'll second Dan's suggestion to contact John Kipping, who probably would 
know better than anyone.
