Some practical experience using crankcase oils in gearcase service.

The use of crankcase oils in gear lube applications is not that uncommon in
industrial applications. A good example are three 1,200+ horsepower drivers
I have the job of babysitting. They send their power through reduction
gearboxes that are exclusively lubed by the same grade oil used in the
engine, 15W-40 Chevron Delo 400. Maintenance inspections show no abnormal
wear.

For what it's worth, the gearbox manufacturer recomends this grade oil over
the traditional gear lube. In addition this particular oil is approved by
Caterpillar and Allison for use in gearbox service where specified. It's
also available in single weight.

I beleive the "W" stands for winter.
