Okay! Here's one for all you wire wizards out there! 1973 Spit, the wires
were butchered beyond belief at time of purchase. The entire front harness
was unwrapped and cleaned and a couple of burnt uneeded wires removed, the
twist splices and twisted together wires were replaced with solder and some
real good tape. The ground wires were spliced with aircraft grade crimp
splices and many, for lack of knowledge of original use, were left hanging.
Some quick disconnects were added behind the gauges so that the entire dash
can be removed without having to memorize what goes where ( no 2 connectors
are alike). and all gauges were grounded in series- parallel (more series
than parallel). A few months after all was done the hazard flash indicator
light stopped flashing and the hazard instrument light started to flash. When
I started moving things around to see what was up, the problem went away.
This was almost a year ago. A few weeks ago the hazard instrument light ( the
little light under the switch that says "hazard") started to flicker and the
instrument fuse blew. It went away a couple of weeks and then the fuse
started blowing again and the master light switch starts getting hot like it
was pulling too much load- the power lead to the switch also decided to melt
its cover, and with hazards on, the instrument light for heat/defrost also
flashes along with the hazard indicator and hazard instrument. With the
exception of the ground, the hazard and instrument lights are isolated from
each other through different fused
circuits. My modifications all appear to be in good condition and there are
no deviations in the circuit except that there are a few more parallel
branches in the instrument lights and all pos terminals are covered in heat
shrink insulation. Does anybody have any experience with this problem and
what might cause voltage to feed back through a circuit like that?
