Maybe it just makes the squeaks and squawks quieter, so you think it is riding 
more 
smoothly?

Actually, it might be that some oil penetrating between the springs will make 
the 
springs "softer", as the frictional resistance (not the resistance of the dirt 
on the 
springs) is probably a significant factor in the spring stiffness?  Certainly 
the 
frictional forces are overcome and the spring leaves move relative to each 
other, but 
the frictional resistance is not insignificant, right?
