Seems that most of the PO bodges people have mentioned are rather
obvious. I just ran into one on my TR-4 that was cute and well hidden.

The throttle shafts on my carbs were very worn (can you say 1/16th inch
lip?), so I decided to treat my car to a carb rebuild, including
re-bushed shafts. The car ran better, but not that much better. A check
with my new ColorTune (my mother-in-law thought the idea of a spark plug
with a window in it was so funny she bought me one) showed rich running
no matter how I adjusted the jets. Turns out the PO had installed a
different needle (non-standard - I could not even find the number in the
Haynes SU carb manual) that ran rich to compensate for all the air
leaking in around the throttle shafts.
