The ratios are more narrowly-spaced so that as you go up through the
gears, shifting at the same maximum RPM, the revs drop to a higher minimum
speed than they would with the standard (wider) ratios.

Upside:  The engine can be kept in the narrower power band.  Usefull for
highly-tweeked race motors.

Downside.  Less flexibility, leading to the need to change the final-drive
for different tracks.
