One of the threads mentioned smoke coming from the tailpipe of a Spitfire
upon gear change and all alternative seemed painfully expensive. I had a
similar experience with my MGB and all it wound up being were $.40
O-rings that went around the valve stems under the rubber hoods at the
top of the valve stems (just below the keepers). I don't know if the
Spit. head had these but it might be worth checking out since a new head
gasket, the O-rings, and some slightly irritating sworking to be all it
took to get rid of the smoke.
Hope this helps.
