Thanks to the list, Ted Rose was made aware of my temperature readout
problem in my 69 Spitfire. He compared the symptoms with the time the
voltage stabilizer failed in his Stag.

I swapped in another voltage stabilizer with no effect. At this point
I was stumped. In examining the wiring diagram and discussing the operation
of the voltage stabilizer with a friend, I realized that the unit was
grounded to the back of the spedometer... and the speedometer light was
flickery and dim. Hmmm!

Re-ran the ground wire and the temperature gage now registers a reasonable
figure. The dash lights are more stable as well! <G>.

Thanks, Ted. FYI, the normal operating voltage of the gage package in
a Jag turns out to be closer to 6 than 12-14 volts, and the official
spec for the Jag is 10 volts. So, uncut battery voltage will make all the
electrical gages read high. My fuel gage now reads lower than it did, too.

(I found the Jag info in ancient digests from this list. I would assume
that many British gage packages run at similar voltages. In any case,
a stabilized voltage has to be lower than the expected range of raw input
voltages).

Now If I could get the silly car to retain oil, I'd be much happier.
