The whole spew on Pozidriv.
(R)
Pozidriv is a registred trademark of Phillips Screw Company.
Since lots of people here do are not aware that lots of the cross-head screws
on their cars are NOT Phillips and to get Pozidriv tools is NOT easy and/or
cheap, I decide to spell out all I know about it ...
Pozidriv (written without the "e" at the end) is this funny standard used in
screws heads of a lot of the 50-60's British cars. They do look like Phillips
but have a additional 4 minor cuts at 45 degree angles with the other ones.
In addition to that the hole in the screw is shallower and the angles of cut
different from the Phillips standard ... so if you really want to preserve
your original screws, go get the right tool for it, your standar Phillips drive
will damage these screw heads.
First of all, your standard British parts supplier (Victoria British, Moss,...)
does not sell these tols and you have to go look somewhere else for it.
They come in sizes 0, 1, 2, 3 & 4 and look pretty much like a normal Phillips
screw driver, but has different angles and length, a shorter tip and four
additional small blades that go into the 4 small cuts in the screw head.
On the quality-side of tools, there are 5 manufacturers that carry a line of
Pozidriv screwdrivers: Snap-on, MacTools, Stanley, SK and AT&G. SK only
manufactures them in size #2, as an insert bit to be used on a screw driver
and another one to be used with a 3/8" drive. AT&G manufactures 4 types of
insert bits (in sizes 1-3) and is the only one that manufacture a size zero
drive.
Snap-on and MacTools have the most complete line as far as size of handles,
Only Snap-on and Stanley offer a size 4 drive. Snap-on also has a complete
line of screwdrivers bits in sizes 1-3 (all for less than a $1.00).
Stanley manufactures all four sizes and have good prices, since it is easier to
get them through normal distributors (that is if the order it for you!).
