Hello lbc friends,
I own a '77MGB and love it to death(probably literal in
the future). When I put it away last year for th winter it had starting
problems. What happened last year is as follows:
I replaced the battery (it was no good) and the car started fine
for a while. Then the car got the same symtoms of low power to the
starter, and the solinoid clicking. I took out the starter and brought it
to a rebuild shop. The brushes were almost non exictent, so I had a
complete overhall. When I dropped it in the car, the damn thing still
wouldn't start right. There is a wire from the starter relay (*I'll get
to this later) that was worn so I cleaned all the terminals, and replaced
the wire. After a month or so, the starter wasn't working too well. I
yanked it out and saw the axle had wrn through the top washer. I took it
back and had warranty repair done. Later that month the alternator went,
so I brought it to the same place and had it rebuilt. I had to pull it
again for warranty work(I won't go there again!!).
At the end of the summer, the same darn thing started happening
again. The slow low power turning of the starter, and the soliniod
clicking. I am 100% sure that the battery is fine. When I get the car
running, all electronics work fine, so I'm pretty sure it's not the
alternator. The starter somtimes works fine too. I do belive the problem
to be this little black box that I think is the relay. (*the one that I
cleaned up). There are no mentions of this part in the manual exept in
the electrical diagram. I am pretty sure that the owner, an electrician,
before me put this non-stock piece in to replace the old one, because the
skrew holes don't match. Could somone please describe the origonal part
to me, and tell me the problems with it? Should I go to the scrap yard
and hope to find a match to my current one? Am I on the wrong track?
Sincerely hoping this summer is better,
Martin Andrew Evans Gladman
P.S. The ignition switch is new as well.
