        It appears as if something should go here, but I cant figure out what.  

There should be a tab with a hole in it on the heater return pipe; that
tab goes over that stud to hold the pipe steady. Also make sure that
you have the stud in right end 'round! Usually the portion with the
shorter section of thread goes into the block.
