Hi, Mike,

In regard to the fuel smell; I used to own, and sadly miss a 1978
XJ6L Series II, with which I experienced a similar problem. After searching
thoroughly for leaks I finally took the vehicle to the Btitish 'T' Shop where
owner Tom LaMarche quickly diagnosed the source of the problem. The two
metal (aluminum ?) fuel lines leading from each fuel tank to the rubber hoses
in the spare wheel tub had become porous. The fuel smell would be barely
evident with the car parked and the boot open, but when under way with the
windows open the rush of the wind blowing by would create enough of a vacuum
to draw the smell into the passenger compartment. To rectify this, I
fashioned replacement pipes from < inch copper tubing, believing that the
copper would be more durable than the original material. From that point I
never had the fuel smell in the cabin again. If the fuel lines are similar
in your Series III, this might correct your problem.

As for your A/C problem I'm afraid I can't be much help. Let me know how you
make out.
