I don't remember the name of the California town (Hayward?), that sits
right on a fault and does not have earthquakes.  Scientists say that they
do not ever expect to see an earthquake there because the fault is
slipping all the time and not building up any pressure.  I saw pictures of
streets and fencelines that had big offsets.  The city just comes out once
in a while and fixes the asphalt on the street where it breaks up.  Folks
have to keep lengthening fences as the offset increases.  You can't get a
building permit to put a building right on the fault, so they don't get
structural damage.  

They never get sudden, destructive earthquakes because life is one slow,
gentle, continuous earthquake.  But land surveyors' notes must be a little
confusing, as your property changes shape over the years.

Well, I thought it was fascinating, anyway...
